Alain and Marie Zamora (the original Paris Cosette) have done an extensive re-write of the book, based upon the original London version by Alain, Claude-Michel and Jonathan Kent. Michel Legrand and Alain have written two completely new songs as well as re-shaping and re-organising the existing material from the London show while retaining the majority of Herbert Kretzmer’s English lyrics.
Marie, at the invitation of Gabriela Haukvicová, the artistic director of the theatre, has directed this new version of Marguerite and done a brilliant job, especially as there are doubles for some of the principal cast: Marguerite, Armand, Annette and Pierrot, who each do one of the performances. Gabriela acted as Marie’s right hand for all technical aspects. The girl who played Marguerite on the opening night, Eva Zbrozková, is stunning, has a beautiful voice and perfectly combines the warmth, resilience and, fragility required to stir the emotions.
William David Brohn, the Broadway orchestrator, who had already collaborated with Alain and Claude-Michel on Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre, has made superb new orchestrations for this version.
The dynamics of the story have changed somewhat as well as the sequencing of songs. Annette and Lucien are brother and sister and Annette is secretly in love with Armand. The changes throughout the story arouse a very emotional response especially to Marguerite who evokes much sympathy as well as admiration. Marie has captured the big moments brilliantly. The public response from the opening night audience was superb with a standing ovation.
